The Image of The Salvation Army Officer

An image is a memory, impression, or attitude toward a person or object, which is a comprehensive image that gives a specific emotion and sensory atmosphere.

The image is derived from the Latin word imago, meaning copy, likeness, and equivalent. Images are divided into inner and outer images. The inner image is a mental representation, and the outer image is what is seen. Since the image of everyone's appearance is a communication that allows us to know the gender, age, health, and abundance, we can know the character, culture, education, ability, and psychological state.

Image is very important to those who try to make a good impression on the public. If a politician made a bad impression on a voter, he is striving to improve it. As such, the image of a politician can be seen as being organized and planned. However, some images can appear by themselves without any ornaments, like the style of a sentence. These images are natural phenomena that control and inspire superficial behavior.

Some, for example, are people who play the image of the Salvation Army with trumpets, drums, and tambourines, pass the streets and launch War Cry Sailings. Or it may have the image of a Salvation Army wearing an army uniform and making donations, or the Salvation Army as a social work organization. In foreign countries, the Salvation Army is called the “Helping Hand”. During the First and Second World Wars, soldiers and their families referred to the Salvation Army as "a friend in need is a friend indeed."

Some said that in Korea, the Presbyterian Church was once recognized as a place for evangelism work, Methodism for education work, Lutheranism for literature work, and Salvation Army social work.

The image of the Salvation Army, known worldwide, has two sides. First, they preach the Gospel as an army that saves souls in the world. Second, the Salvation Army is a people who help those who stand on the edge of the cliff and serve them with joy.

Then, what should be the image of the Salvation Army officer in a secular society? There is only one answer. The image of the Salvation Army officer should be that of a person who serves others. In order for an officer to become like Jesus Christ, he must be a servant who serves all people like the Lord who said he came to serve the world (Mark 10:45) (Mark 9:35). The officers of the Salvation Army, who had the same nature as God (Heb. 1:3), took the form of a servant, became like a man when Jesus came into the world, and obeyed until death (Phil. 2:7-8).

The image that the Salvation Army officer is like a person serving with a humble heart may be very disturbing in view of the modern trend of success only with authority and position. First of all, when it comes to serving people, it looks like a person with no position or value. Even in Jesus' day, those who served meant poverty and subordination. Jesus had no honor, was poor, and was despised. However, the poverty, humility, and obedience of the one who serves are not to be linked with ignorance or other defects. Jesus said that if any of you wants to be the first, he must be your servant (Matthew 20:26-27).

The Salvation Army officer naturally became a servant of the Lord as a result of being reborn by the Holy Spirit. Attention must be able to support others. This does not mean that Salvation Army officers do not have to have knowledge or wisdom to judge soundly. The Salvation Army officer needs to master and develop all the knowledge he can learn. The reason for having these qualities of mind is for one purpose only. To become an effective minister to help those in need with Jesus Christ.

When a Salvation Army officer wears the form of a slave (Phil. 2:5-9), it becomes unconscious because it is dressed as Christ. The quality of the Lord's servant is spontaneously manifested in the grace that reflects Jesus Christ in the heart. Like Moses, the Salvation Army officer unconsciously shows the image of serving those in need when everyone looks at the officer. When you reflect on Jesus Christ when you serve like Jesus, the authority of the Salvation Army officer is established.

The image of the officer who became the servant of Jesus Christ is permanent. The images of those who seek reason and position in this world will disappear, but the image of the officer who became the servant of Jesus Christ will not disappear forever.

The image of the servant of Jesus Christ, the authority of the Salvation Army officer, must be preserved forever.

In order for all officers of the Salvation Army to sit in the seat of glory, they must become servants of all men. (Mark 10:44)

It would be good to recall the Salvation Army Officer's Covenant.

My Covenant:

(PURPOSE)
Called by God to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ As an Officer of The Salvation Army.

I bind myself to Him in this solemn covenant

(TARGET)
to love and serve Him supremely all my days,
to live to win souls and make their salvation the first purpose of my life,
to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable, and befriend those who have no friends,
to maintain the doctrines and principles of The Salvation Army, and by god's grace prove myself a worthy officer.

Done in the strength of my Lord and Savior, and in the presence of my leaders and my comrade Salvationists.
